ROUND eight, a one day game in the TDCA's competition will be the last for this calendar year. Cricket will resume, after the seasonal break, on Saturday 7 January 2006.
Again the forecast shows showers and the odd storm for Friday and Saturday, but it is hoped the wet weather, should it eventuate will not be that severe as to prevent cricket from being played.
Four teams, CATS, Gormandale, Imperials and Toongabbie have won four games each and one would expect to see them in the finals with Rovers, who have won three games and are pressing for a spot. It is a shade early to predict a final four as Students, Glengarry (one outright win) and Traralgon West with two wins each will also be playing all out to figure in the finals mix in March.
To this week's games and Glengarry will host CATS. The Magpies on home turf, coming of a mediocre effort against Ex Students, will be going hard to redeem themselves and get back into the winners circle so as to keep their hopes alive for the run into the finals.
Glen had Students in trouble when it had the first wicket with only 22 runs on the board, but concentration and determination returned to Students' batsmen who saw the club through to a good win, quite easily at the end.
Glen will have to put this defeat behind it and play a lot better to take the points off CATS. The visitors on the other hand, have four good wins and an exciting tie (against Churchill in round three) under their belt. They possess quality batsmen in the form of Richardson the opener and Derham his partner, with the strong middle order of Charleston and Theissling both of whom can bat powerfully enough to make things difficult for Glen's bowlers. Add to this CATS formidable bowling attack of Fahy, Charleston and Nick Scammell who will trouble Glen's batsmen no end. CATS to take the points in what may turn out a close game.
Rovers will meet Ex Students at Duncan Cameron Park.
Ex Students with their tails up coming off a good win against Glengarry last week will be looking to do even better against Rovers who may have a slight advantage playing on home soil. Rovers come into this game with three wins, a washed out draw against Centrals in round two and a loss to Traralgon West in round four. They had two consecutive wins before the bye last week when they beat reigning premiers Gormandale in round five very convincingly by 100 runs but just scraped home by seven runs in the last over against Churchill in round six.
Rovers have a wealth of talent in both batting and bowling. Taylor, who played top grade cricket in South Africa, is one of the best batsmen in the competition. He places the ball well with plenty of power and brute strength and has so far caused opposing bowlers some heartaches. Captain, Gillard is a classy batsman and is capable of making plenty of runs coming in at number three, four or five and together with Taylor can tear any attack apart. Also in the batting department are Brown and Wilkie capable of contributing useful scores.
Rovers bowlers too are in the top bracket. Opening bowler Worthington, already totting up 16 wickets for the season, can be a difficult proposition to score runs off when he strikes line and length which he often does. They've also got medium pacers MacAulay and Zepnic with off spinner Dunstan to give good support to the paceman. If all these players are available for this round it will make things difficult for Students to contend with.
Students too have good calibre batsmen the likes of opener Sykes and Forrest or MacGregor, who, if they can carve a good opening partnership, will leave the free hitting players like Millington and Stockdale to play their naturally aggressive game and go on to build a sizeable total, possibly a winning one. They however, lack the quality bowling strength that Rovers possess which may be a stumbling block in their quest for points in this game. Rovers to win with something to spare.
Raiders will take on Gormandale at Yinnar. Raiders' only advantage here is that they are on home turf but even this will not stop the current premiers from taking honors in this encounter. Gormandale's top batsmen, of which they have plenty have all struck form and are scoring runs with authority having faced bowling attacks of better quality than Raiders can produce. Raiders' only win was in round two against Ex Students. With four losses in a row and a bye in between, Raiders will find it beyond their capacity to topple the Tigers who should go on to win this game and win with authority.
Traralgon West and Churchill will meet at the Recreation Reserve.
West has won two games, lost three with a bye in between, while Churchill has won one, lost four and played a tied game against CATS in round three. Traralgon West has hard hitting, consistent batsmen in their line up, Howe, Smith, McQualter, McMahon and Henry, should they all play in this game and will give a good account of themselves. Their bowling attack is dependable and capable of restricting Churchill's batsmen. Churchill, though not having an impressive record, has made two big scores in the competition so far - 341 against Ex Students to record a win and 262 against Rovers which was insufficient to take the honors. Churchill's bowling attack of Flanigan, Farley and McQuillen, though an useful asset, may just lack the quality to cause much trouble to Wests batsmen. Wests to take the points in this game.
Toongabbie are at home to Centrals. Toongabbie with a loss, bye and four consecutive wins are primed to make it five in a row. It has top grade batsmen, a quality bowling attack and excellent fielders. Toongabbie's batsmen have already proved themselves with consistent and heavy scoring on all sides of the wicket. Veneman, Lang, Johnson, Spendlove, Shippen and Wheildon are capable of big scores and Centrals will not have the fire power to counter their excellent batting. Centrals may find it beyond them to take the battle up to Toongabbie who should win well to take the points in this encounter.
Imperials have the bye.
