LATROBE Valley women's cricket side will play at home in Morwell this Sunday when it takes on the improving Leongatha and District Association.
The Valley had plenty of batting practice for the match when it gave an undermanned Sale-Maffra outfit a hiding in round seven of the Gippsland Cricket League competition.
The local girls travelled to Stephenson Park, Sale for the match, sending the home side in to bat.
The first over from demon left arm bowler Robin Fitzpatrick started a collapse from which the home side was never able to recover. Opener Tina Robinson (0) was comprehensively bowled by a huge inswinging yorker on the third ball of the day and then only two balls later Renee McLaren (0) fell the same way, 2/0 after the first over.
Fitzpatrick in her second over created further havoc when she dismissed a further two Sale/Maffra bats; Lisa Carstairs (1), after being dropped earlier in the over skied one to Bubbles Solomon, then the very next ball Marie May (0) was skittled middle stump.
The home side was a disastrous 4/3 and Amanda Anderson (0) did not last long at the crease as Michelle Williams snuck one through her defences and knocked back middle peg - 5/3.
Experienced campaigner Kathy Warford joined Gram at the wicket and set about restoring their crumbling innings. They managed to keep out the bowlers for a period and pushed the score to 15. The introduction of Raelene Billingsley to the bowling attack brought immediate dividends as she enticed a lofted drive from Warford (6) where Fitzpatrick took a well-judged catch in the gully.
Jess May (1) provided some support to Gram who was looking comfortable at the crease but a mix up in their calling spelt trouble. Sale/Maffra were now 7/17. Gram (8) who looked likely to bat through the innings fell in similar circumstance.
A couple of players short meant May was left at one not out and the home side had been dismissed for a disastrous 20.
Fitzpatrick with 4/1 improved her already impressive bowling average while Williams and Billingsley were miserly in claiming a wicket apiece.
Latrobe Valley openers Heather Farley and Fitzpatrick strode to the wicket with a run chase foremost in their minds. They did not take long to secure the six points for the visitors and slowly but surely put on a solid 45 run partnership.
Fitzpatrick (24) was first to go, caught behind off the bowling of impressive medium pacer Jess May. Belinda Battilana made the most of her promotion up the list and hit a quick 21 runs before she played back to Lisa Carstairs and paid the penalty. The Valley had moved along to 2/80 and was in search of batting practice and much needed bonus points.
Farley, a rock in defence had progressed her personal score along to 27 and was just starting to hit out before she to fell to Carstairs - the ball clipping the top of middle stump. Hollie Mack (3) strode to the crease and made an immediate impact with a beautifully timed lofted cover drive for two, but soon after backed away to cut Amanda Anderson and was bowled.
Brooke Higgins (5) went about chasing some quick runs with her new partner in A J Bury but her innings was cut short when she swung and missed - bowled by a tiring Marissa Gram.
With Michelle Williams playing a smart support role the scoreboard was ticking over at a great rate. Three impressive sixes and five boundaries were the feature of her compulsory retirement at 51.
Williams departed with 11 runs against her name after lofting one to Gram off the bowling of Jess May. With two new bats at the crease in the experienced Renee Vidler and Jane Bone quick runs were the order of the day. Against a tiring attack this pair took over and put on 65 runs together to ensure the visiting side got some worthwhile batting bonus points. At 6 for 207 the innings was closed with Bone on 38 not out and Vidler on 10 not out.
Carstairs with 2/21 off her 8 overs was the pick of the bowlers, youngster Jess May also snared two wickets while Amanda Anderson and Marissa Gram had one wicket apiece to their names.
