Moonee Ponds lawn bowler Barrie Lester said he hoped his win at the TRUenergy Yallourn Classic Singles event last week would serve as a platform for a big 2012 season.
Lester, who became the first person to win four titles at Yallourn, said the win gave him plenty of confidence heading into next month's Australian Open.
"It's a great start to the year, this one I really feel could be a stepping stone for me to try and push for Australian selection again and I'm really eager to have a big year," Lester said.
In Thursday's final Lester took on Moonee Ponds teammate Garry Ball and after a tight first hour on the greens, Lester broke away to secure a 25 to 16 victory.
"I'm still in a bit of shock; it meant a lot to me, I suppose to come here and know that I've won three and expectations are probably high to achieve again," Lester said.
"It's great to finally get there but I didn't do it easy, I had a lot of tough opponents along the way."
The last of those opponents was Ball, who ensured Lester didn't have it all his own way in the final.
"It's never easy playing your friends which I've had to the last two or three games," Lester said.
"Garry is such a consistent player and it's great we have him in our team every week."
It was a match of contrasting styles with Lester's methodical action going head-to-head with the more languid approach of Ball.
However, both players adopted similar tactics to deal with the gusty conditions.
"Garry was moving the lengths around a bit and so was I, and when the wind was chopping and changing it was hard to really put four bowls together so I just had to hang in there," Lester said. "I was hoping to go longer as the greens slowed down and then hopefully my opponent wouldn't reach; over the longer distance it is a lot harder."
It was Ball that made the brighter start to the final, drawing first blood with two shots on the opening end.
After finally getting on the board during the fourth end, Lester took control with the lead bowl to hold three on the next before a drive from Ball put the jack out of play and killed the end.
The pair then traded blows until the decisive 23rd end.
High quality bowling from both players resulted in two shots for Lester, which took his lead to four.
He then rolled in seven shots in a row to seal the win. After the match Ball admitted Lester had simply been "too good" on the day.
"To be honest I was probably a bit scratchy throughout the whole tournament but the weather had a lot to do with that, but Barrie just played too good for me today," Ball said.
However, he vowed to return again next year.
