TWO sporting clubs have joined forces in a bid to raise money for a sporting pavilion at their shared home ground, Old Trafford Oval, Traralgon.
After years of sheltering under trees at the ground, TEDAS Junior Football Club and Ex-Students Cricket Club decided something had to be done about the lack of facilities at the venue.
The clubs have formed a joint committee with a goal of raising $250,000 for the pavilion.
Ex-Students committee member Helen Barnes said she hoped the money could be raised soon.
"Anyone who has played or watched cricket or football at the oval knows that the weather can be very unforgiving," Barnes said.
"Both players and spectators are looking forward to getting the building."
The pavilion, which will include change rooms, toilets, meeting rooms and first aid facilities, has already been designed by local builder Brett Neilson.
He said the intention of the proposed pavilion is for it to be used by the community.
"We intend for the pavilion to be used by other community groups such as the Agricultural Society," Neilson said.
"We want it to be a gathering place to create more of a community feel, because at the moment people are sitting in their cars to get out of the weather and therefore aren't interacting.
"That interaction is really important to the survival of community sporting clubs".
He said the addition of a first aid facility was also significant, as there was no equipment currently available to deal with injuries.
According to Neilson, injured players have been carried or walked off the field when a stretcher would have been more appropriate.
The campaign for the new pavilion has kicked off with an application for a $100,000 grant from the State Government's Community Facility Funding Program, and a new car will be raffled off by the clubs on 25 February.
