West Gippsland

MORWELL proved to be the 'big cat' of the West Gippsland Latrobe Netball Association after producing a 65-20 rout of Moe in its Sunday encounter in round eight.

The Tigers stamped their authority on the contest from the outset and never released their firm grip on the contest as they increased their lead over the Lions at every change.

The Morwell midcourt, led by Lisa Yates and Michaila Hutchison exerted continual pressure on their counterparts and the majority of what got through to Moe's goal circle was repelled by Courtney Garth or Jacklyn Stevens.

The Lions slipped behind by 11 goals at the quarter time break and were 20 goals down at the major interval.

Ashlea Stubbs and Hayley Shaw battled valiantly in defence for Moe but the visitors were continually forced into errors when looking to advance to their attacking end.

Despite some poor shooting, Jamilee Pearce was an imposing presence in the goal circle and formed a potent combination with Jennifer Pickering.

Occasionally the Lions displayed some excellent passages of play but could never sustain that effort and precision as the Tigers coasted to a big win.

Leongatha and Traralgon played out an enthralling draw at the SPLASH Centre after the Maroons recovered from a three-goal deficit at half time.

After level-pegging throughout the opening term, the Parrots turned up the heat with a strong showing in the second period to extend their lead to 23-20.

On resumption after half time, Traralgon fought back gradually and established a brief position of control with a dominant third term run to gain a 33-31 advantage at the last change.

The Maroons lost a little of their composure in the final period and an intense final quarter allowed the home team to fight back to leave the scores locked at 46 apiece at the final whistle.

Mid Gippsland

THERE were no upsets coming out of round nine, except to say the Newborough Under 15 side took it right up to league leaders, Mirboo North.

The under 15 competition is proving to be the most interesting of all the grades this season.

Mirboo North were strong out of the blocks early but the rest of the competition was catching up, especially with the Tigers only winning by one goal.

At the half way mark of the season it was Morwell East who were again dominating in all grades, except in the under 15s.

Mirboo North have shown they were again a force this season, particularly in the junior section with both its under 15s and 17s on top of the ladders.

In A Grade, Morwell East and Mirboo North will square off again in round 11.

The Tigers could knock off the Hawks who haven't looked all that convincing this season.

Thorpdale had a good win over the young Hill End girls.

That win could decide who sits on top of the ladder come end of the season.

Round 10 matches look fairly one sided except when Thorpdale takes on Newborough in A Grade.

Newborough will be one of the sides to watch as they work hard to prove their dominance, although Thorpdale will make a concerted effort to keep its team within reach of the league leaders.

Thorpdale should take this game.

The other interesting game will be in C Grade between Hill End who are sitting seventh and eight placed Boolarra.

The Demons should win this game as their goalers will be far too experienced for the Hill End girls.

Two weeks ago Boolarra took it right up to Morwell East but just couldn't hold on for a win.
