GIPPSLAND Soccer League's (GSL) under 12 boys team is busy preparing for the Victorian Country Championships to be held in Swan Hill on the last weekend of June.
This team was the only GSL team competing in a Melbourne based competition this year.
The structure of the team consists of nine players who were joint under 11 Victorian Country Champions last year.
They also finished third in the under 11 South East Kangaroos Yellow competition in 2008.
The players in the squad are Traralgon City's Liam Andersen, Daniel Holt, and Jordan Walton; Ayden Kelly, Lachlan McKenzie, and Stuart Hiriart of Moe United; Falcon Sebastian Famularo; Zac Mangion of Churchill and Massimo Santucci from Warragul.
They have been joined by Jesse Maximiw, Thomas Russell, and James Guisti from Falcons; Jack Lester and Jordan Aquilina of Traralgon City; Moe United's Bryce Robinson and Mitchell Gorman of Trafalgar.
The team will again be coached by Chris Van Lambaart and he will be assisted by Mark Hiriart.
The combination has struggled to hit top form in one of the toughest under 12 grade South East Melbourne competitions.
So far the squad has played in two draws and four losses.
The high level of competition is expected to assist the team when it competes in the Swan Hill championships.
Last weekend the team travelled to play Bentleigh Greens and were hopeful of breaking through for their first win of the season.
They had the bulk of play and constantly attacked the Bentleigh goal but failed to penetrate the defence.
At the other end of the ground, keeper Liam Andersen and the tight defence in general easily handled the handful of occasions they were tested.
Gippsland had about 15 forward attacks compared to Bentleigh's four but failed to find the back of the net.
The final result was a nil-all draw.
The team faces Southern Stars this Sunday at 10.10am at the Latrobe City Sports Stadium.
This will be the teams final game before heading to the Victorian Country Championships in Swan Hill.
