Victory for Trafalgar SC

29 Oct, 2009 09:28 AM
TRAFALGAR Victory Soccer Club will soon have a new home, after two full length soccer pitches were announced as part of the Trafalgar Recreation Precinct.

State Sports Minister James Merlino announced the $800,000 development, which has been funded as a joint partnership between Baw Baw Shire and the State Government.

The soccer club, which currently plays at Trafalgar High School, has long been forced to reschedule matches due to a lack of facilities.

Trafalgar Victory president Mark Judd said he was ``delighted'' to receive the funding.

``We couldn't ask for more to be honest. We always thought it might eventuate but we didn't expect the timeframe to be so quick,'' Mr Judd said.

``There's always that concern that it won't get over the line.''

The funding will include provisions for light towers, as well as showers and a referees room.

``We require two pitches to do a proper home and away season, at the moment to play at night we've got one light and when six teams are using that area it becomes choppy,'' he said.

The soccer club provided $5000 to the project with the government contributing $400,000, which was matched by council.

Mr Merlino said the facility will help the club cater for the growing demand for soccer in the area.

``Strong sporting clubs support stronger communities and families and this development is a major boost for a club that has outgrown its current home ground,'' Mr Merlino said.

``When you look at regional communities sport is the glue that keeps these communities together.''
