Webber ton propels Bulldogs forward

02 Nov, 2009 09:54 AM
NEWBOROUGH Bulldogs captain coach Barney Webber destroyed Moe with a brilliant century in round five of the TRUenergy Yallourn Cup.

The Dogs have now taken top spot on the ladder after inflicting Moe's second defeat for the season.

Moe won the toss and had no hesitation in batting first at Burrage but Webber struck an early blow when he had Tom Long caught by Kris Ayton for two.

Andrew Philip (4), Rob Phoenix (6) and Dave Kelly (0) fell cheaply to Brendan Brincat and Wayne Fleming and were in real trouble at 5/35.

Peter Grima, with a fighting 44, held the innings together and with some help from brother Brad (16) advanced the score past the 100 mark.

In his first game of the season Tom Crosby got rid of the tail cheaply to finish with 2/20 from 10 and Moe were all out for 117.

Webber (109) and Aiden Vesty (6) put on 47 for the opening stand and were 4/87, with Webber dominating.

Wayne Fleming (13) joined Webber and the pair helped the Bulldogs safely past the Moe score.

Tailenders Rhys Lee (25*) and Tim Cranwell (16) got the score to a valuable 208 after 45 overs.

Mirboo North v Latrobe

LATROBE had an eight-run win over Mirboo North in a high scoring match where some good performances were recorded.

Batting first, the Tigers were well served by Charlie Kat with a fine 74 and Jed Alexander, with 48, finished at 6/189 after 47 overs.

John Kus bowled tightly with 2/21 off his 10 and Anthony Bloomfield 1/30 from his quota.

Latrobe started to struggle at 6/87 but Kus came to the rescue with 62 valuable runs.

When he went with the score at 8/169 it looked as if Mirboo North could win this match but Ash Halkett (26*) and Adam Duncan (5*) got the Sharks over the line.

Yallourn North v Morwell

YALLOURN North was without Evan Sheekey (who was getting married), Luke Nelson, and Scott Jones (shoulder injury) in their match against Morwell.

The Bombers got away to a flying start with an opening stand of 89 between Glen Sheekey (22) and Shane Galea (83).

Once Mick Higgins came into the attack he made short work of the other bats, taking 7/39 off 8.5 overs, with Mark Cukier taking 3/39 off 10.

Morwell started its innings off in poor fashion when Marty Giddens was caught by Darcy Shellcot off the bowling of Darren Wilkes for a duck.

Craig Giddens (35) and Mick Higgins (76) took the score to 65 before Giddens was out and wickets started to tumble as they slumped to 5/100.

Higgins was joined by Travis Willis (22) and they helped Morwell over the line with Higgins completing a fine double of 7/39 and an excellent 76 runs.

Darcy Shellcot bowled well to take 3/11 from five and Rick Martin took 2/14 in an improved Bomber performance.

With the one-day matches on hold until next month, Newborough Bulldogs and Latrobe lead the pack with three wins while Moe, Mirboo North and Morwell have two wins each. There are two more one-day matches remaining on 19 December and 9 January.

Ladder: Newborough 34.75, Latrobe 33.31, Moe 28.90, Mirboo North 28.29, Morwell 27.17, Yallourn North 14.01
