Teams from across Victoria converged on Melbourne for the annual Victorian Country Cricket League's country week competition last week.
Traralgon and District Cricket Association and the Central Gippsland Cricket Association fielded teams, with the TDCA side finishing the week winless in the provincial division and will now drop to division two next year.
TDCA spokesman Gavin Foenander said the result was disappointing, as it was a long way back from relegation to the provincial division.
"We had a couple of really close games which we couldn't finish off" Foenander said.
"In provincial you have to win at least one game to stay in. It took a long time to get there and now you basically have to win all five games in division two, so it's a tough gig to get back up," he said.
The main problem, according to Foenander, was that the association could not field its strongest team.
"The crux is that our best players, the ones who could make a difference, didn't go because of work and other commitments which is totally understandable," Foenander said.
"I'm not trying to make excuses - our team didn't perform well at all, but it's a problem that all teams face every year.
"The standard in provincial is very high and to do well you really have to have your best team in."
Foenander said next year the association would focus on staying in division two. "Firstly we'll try and make sure that we stay in division two," he said.
"Then we'll focus on trying to get back to provincial.
"That's where the prestige is and all the good regions are. One thing we will work on is trying to make sure our best players available for at least some of the time."
CGCA spokesman John Hehir was pleased with his association's performance in division four.
"They did very well and were unlucky to be washed out on Thursday when they were in a winning position," Hehir said.
"They won their first two matches in a very strong division and were really unlucky on the Thursday."
Hehir was also happy with the quality of the side sent down.
"We were able to send down a fairly strong team which we were pleased about," Hehir said.
CGCA captain Andrew Phillip was also positive about his team's performance.
"We were definitely unlucky to be rained out, but that's cricket. The main thing was that the team went together really well, and we're certainly looking forward to next year," he said.
