LATROBE Valley residents will be given the tools to reduce their carbon footprint through a new section of Latrobe City Council's website.
Councillors voted at Monday night's meeting to publish a statement on its website about the ``generally agreed'' effects of carbon pollution and provide a list of actions householders and businesses could take to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
The information will be added to the website next year and eventually be converted to a booklet that will be distributed to all homes and businesses in the municipality.
In moving the motion, councillor Ed Vermeulen described climate change as ``one of the most important issues facing the region''.
Cr Vermeulen told The Express he believed most people still didn't fully understand the environmental impacts of carbon pollution, and those who did, were unsure what they could do to combat it.
``People feel very powerless because they don't understand it and they feel their own effort is quite insignificant,'' Cr Vermeulen said.
``I don't think people should underestimate what they can do on a personal level.
``By giving them the right information, people will feel empowered and more educated in getting back to councillors and parliamentary representatives to say `we want you to do this'.''
Cr Vermeulen said he hoped Valley residents would ``set the trend'' in Gippsland for reducing their carbon footprint.
``I hope this becomes a more organised effort in the Latrobe Valley, it gives us an edge.''
The Latrobe City Climate Change Consultative Committee will be involved in establishing the new section of the website.
