Toongabbie roses in bloom

05 Nov, 2009 09:36 AM
ROSE lovers will have an opportunity to view the new Jane McGrath rose at the annual Roses in Toongabbie event this Sunday.

Twenty-three of the pale pink roses will be on display, which were released in memory of Jane McGrath following her death from breast cancer in 2008.

A garden and plaque will be unveiled on the day in memory of McGrath and other breast cancer sufferers.

Event organiser Joy McWatters said she hoped the event would help raise funds for cancer victims in Gippsland.

``A lot of people elect not to have treatment because of having to go to Melbourne, so the more money we raise for our area means that more people can have treatment here,'' Mrs McWatters said.

All proceeds raised by the event will be donated to the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre at the Latrobe Regional Hospital.

Guests will have an opportunity to take in two gardens, which Mrs McWatters said are located on two acres.

A large variety of roses will be on display, including modern roses and older rose varieties dating back to the 1500s.

Last year the event drew 400 guests, with many travelling from outside the region.

``We had a lot of people from Melbourne last year who went to the art show, they came here and they did some of the wineries,'' she said.

``They said it was a fantastic day and they asked if we were having it at a similar time.''

The day will include a traditional ploughman lunch, along with morning and afternoon tea.

``Everything is homemade, nothing is bought and some of our ladies have made slices,'' Mrs McWatters said.

Roses in Toongabbie will be held on Sunday from 10am to 5.30pm at 60 Travoyers Road, Toongabbie.

Admission is $8, food and drinks can be purchased on the day.
