News service with a vision

25 Aug, 2008 11:11 AM
IMAGINE if you couldn't read about what's happening in local football competitions or in the community in which you live?

This isolating and often frustrating experience is quite common according to Vision Australia.

It estimates less than five per cent of printed information is accessible to the blind or vision impaired.

The problem is expected to become more widespread as the population ages.

Experts estimate the number of people who are blind or vision impaired will double to 600,000 by 2020 as baby boomers reach retirement age.

Vision Australia and community radio station Gippsland FM have come up with a solution to the growing problem.

From 5 September, Vision Australia volunteers will begin reading the Latrobe Valley Express on air.

The broadcasts will be on 104.7FM every Friday between 11.05am and noon.

``Vision Australia strives to maintain connectivity for people unable to access print independently through our radio service,'' Vision Australia radio coordinator Ray Maher said.

``We are really excited by this new initiative in the Gippsland region.''

Vision Australia broadcasts a 24 hour a day program from Warragul on 93.5FM, however the signal loses strength over distance.

``We are always looking for volunteers or other community partnerships,'' Mr Maher said.

For more information or to volunteer contact Vision Australia on 1300847466 or visit www.visionaustralia.org.
