LATROBE Valley youngest patients are set to benefit from a new initiative which would bring specialist care closer to home.
The Monash Children's Telehealth program would assist with medical education and the management of patients in Gippsland.
Monash Children's medical director Professor Nick Freezer said the program would improve access for paediatric patients in the area to specialised medical care.
Prof Freezer said this would be achieved through the use of information technology to provide video conferencing and image sharing with local health services and general practitioners.
"It is also to improve access for children in Gippsland to specialised medical care through the use of video conferencing and image sharing," Prof Freezer said.
"This will allow us to provide high quality specialist care and multidisciplinary consultations for patients and their families who are unable to have difficulty travelling to Melbourne.
"We intend to broadcast important clinical meetings at Monash Children's to regional Victoria.
"It will also provide the opportunity for doctors in Gippsland to access specialist care for their patients without the need for the patients to travel to Melbourne."
Prof Freezer said the Department of Health initiative is aimed at supporting the care of children in regional Victoria and is expected to start by the end of the year.
Latrobe Regional Hospital spokesperson said LRH welcomed the initiative.
