COOLING towers and a coal mine have been depicted in an unusual art installation which opened at the Latrobe Regional Gallery today.
`Carbon Obscura' is the work of celebrated artist Lloyd Godman. He has used the concept of a camera obscura, an optical device which was the forerunner to the modern day camera, to create a lightshow with a `conscience'.
Mr Godman is hoping his piece highlighting the power industry will prompt discussions about climate change.
The piece has been created by a skeleton of pipework covered in black plastic. Tiny holes have been made in the plastic and when sunlight hits the plastic, the stunning images of the power station appear.
People are able to enter the installation to experience Godman's artistic impression of a landscape which is all too familiar.
``Viewed from the inside, the piece creates a dramatic effect as the light penetrates and is captured by smoke that is generated inside the work,'' Latrobe Regional Gallery team leader, Bryony Nainby said.
The work was commissioned as part of `The Grid - Epicentre', a Green Expectations project which aims to raise awareness about climate change.
Carbon Obscura is open until 27 February and entry to the gallery at 138 Commercial Road, Morwell is free.
