It all sounds Greek to George

It all sounds Greek to George

29 Oct, 2007 10:54 AM
WHEN George Andreou started hosting the region's only Greek radio program he thought of it as a short term venture.

Twenty nine years later it has become his passion and just as important for the Latrobe Valley's Greek and Cypriot community.

George can recall the milestones of many families in the area.

Whether it be in honour of a birthday, wedding, baptism or engagement, Greek and Cypriot families in the Valley phone George to request a song on his radio program.

The Greek Variety program will next month celebrate 30 years on air, as the only program of its kind outside of Melbourne.

From humble beginnings in 1977, broadcasting from a tin shed in Churchill, to an extremely popular program with Greek music, current affairs segments and local announcements, George has been part of it all.

The radio program runs from 7pm-9pm on Tuesdays on 104.7 Gippsland FM and was first hosted by Peter Politakis.

"I just happened to be playing with my radio in 1977 when I came across a Greek station," George said.

"I heard Peter and thought it was from Melbourne.

"I asked if he wanted me to help out because he couldn't speak Greek very well, then we eventually moved to Morwell."

George said the program had evolved a lot over 30 years, from playing records and reel tapes, to CDs and MP3s.

He said the station had lasted so long because of support from the Greek community and sponsors.

"If it wasn't for the support of the Greek community we wouldn't be here, I'm so honoured to be a part of this, 30 years is a long time."

This year the Greek Variety program won an award for best ethnic program on Gippsland FM.

George said he could not even begin to describe how grateful he was to the radio station for allowing him to host a program that keeps the Greek community in touch with local events, topical issues and each other.

"I enjoy it so much because we're keeping people in touch with current affairs programs from the old country," he said.

"It makes me feel good that people appreciate what I'm doing.

"Hopefully we'll keep doing it for a few more years."

George also wanted to thank his wife Irene.

"I want to thank her for assisting me all these years, she's my right hand, I thank her for her patience and love."

He also wanted to say thanks for donations from the Greek community and sponsorship from Littleton Hackford, as muchof the music he plays has to be imported from overseas.

"Now the people who have requested songs over the years, their kids are having kids, 30 years is unbelievable."
