TRARALGON’S popular men’s shed has undergone a casual renovation and its services are now available to the community.
Members of the shed have relinquished their former ‘Work Focus’ name, to become ‘Traralgon Men’s Shed and Woodworking Group’.
The shed has served as a workshop for men looking to “come, do and make what they like”, according to the shed’s co-coordinator Colin Reid.
“We used to make things as part of the work for a dole scheme initially, but that phased out, so we thought Work Focus was not applicable (as a name) anymore,” Mr Reid said.
“So now we make a bit of garden furniture just to support ourselves.”
Mr Reid said he encouraged members of the community to become involved in the shed for a small price.
“Men can just come over, have a cuppa and get things off their chest,” he said.
“Men talk more shoulder-to-shoulder than they do face-to-face.
“We also have a women’s class on Thursday nights for the women to come buy and discuss some of their ideas as well.”
The Traralgon Men’s Shed and Woodworking Group committee of management currently includes six members, Mr Reid said.
He said the shed was originally formed more than 15 years ago as a way of helping men fight depression and mental health.
“We’re retired and we don’t want to just sit at home bidding our time,” Mr Reid said.
“Instead we thought we could get up and do something worthwhile.
“We still feel we have skills that could benefit the community.”
The Traralgon Men’s Shed and Woodworking Group is available to the public for an annual membership fee of $5.
Residents can also use the materials, tools and equipment available at the shed for $15 a day.
