THE Traralgon CBD Safety Committee is fighting to attract funding to install surveillance cameras in the town's nightclub precinct.
The committee has endorsed a feasibility study recently conducted through Latrobe City Council which identifies five priority sites for the installation of closed circuit television (CCTV).
Car parks in Kay Street and Church Street behind Inferno nightclub, the Franklin Street Post Office, Kay Street between Breed and Franklin streets and the Seymour Street taxi rank were all earmarked for public security cameras.
Safety Committee chair and Latrobe City councillor Rohan Fitzgerald said the committee applied to the Attorney-General's Department for funding but the application was unsuccessful.
``We have asked for feedback on that decision and will continue looking for funding opportunities,'' Cr Fitzgerald said.
He said if the project did not attract funding from federal or state government grants, council could consider including it in next year's budget.
The study estimates the cameras would cost about $150,000 to buy and install.
Cr Fitzgerald said if set up, the cameras would form part of an overall strategy to improve safety in Traralgon's CBD at night.
``There's a general perception that if you put cameras in certain areas it will assist in crime prevention,'' he said.
The feasibility study identifies major safety issues in the nightclub precinct including high levels of unreported crime, assaults and difficulty in moving large groups of people out of the CBD.
Traralgon police Senior Sergeant Ann-Marie Stevens said she fully supported the use of CCTV in the town centre.
``It assists us to identify offenders at a later time and if people know these things are in existence, it prevents crime,'' Snr Sgt Stevens said.
``We will be able to identify people we previously haven't been able to identify and that makes people feel safer.''
