Field of courage and hope

02 Nov, 2009 09:48 AM
SURROUNDING a cluster of miniature pink silhouettes, a group of women and their families have paid tribute to those who have battled breast cancer and those who are affected by the illness.

The gathering at the ``mini field of women'' at Latrobe Regional Hospital heard stories and poems from survivors as well as a rendition of the popular Gloria Gaynor song ``I Will Survive''.

Breast cancer survivor Nikki Te Paa, who works at the hospital, finished her treatment in February.

She wrote a poem for the occasion and said she was forever grateful for the support of her family, friends and nurses.

``It was emotional, very emotional,'' Mrs Te Paa said.

``The cancer care nurses _ you just can't say enough about them.

``When you are feeling at your lowest they find a way to bring you back up.

``I don't dwell on it coming back, I think of it like a bump in the road and now it's gone.''

Women who are concerned about breast cancer can call the Cancer Council Helpline on 131120 to speak to a cancer nurse.
