Carbon reduction devil is in the detail

11 Aug, 2008 09:00 AM
NATIONALS MHR for Gippsland Darren Chester has written to Climate Change Minister Penny Wong requesting the details of the Rudd Government's Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme be released immediately.

He said industries need to know the full impact of the CPRS to better prepare their businesses.

Mr Chester recently met with the Latrobe Valley's major industries to get a run down on the possible impacts of a CPRS.

He has met with Loy Yang Power, International Power Hazelwood and Australian Paper's Maryvale Mill seeking their comments on the CPRS.

Mr Chester wrote to Ms Wong last week expressing concerns about the scheme's economic modelling which has yet to be released.

He urged Ms Wong to release the information as soon as possible so the Latrobe Valley can ``judge the full impacts'' of government policy on climate change.

Mr Chester said the protection of local jobs and understanding the effects of the Rudd Government's emissions trading scheme was his number one priority.

``I'm concerned that we have not seen any details of the economic modelling which will underpin the green paper,'' Mr Chester said.

``The Rudd Government has not revealed the likely impact on jobs and the cost of the living in the Latrobe Valley.

``This is a pivotal issue for the future of our region and I urge Rudd Government ministers to visit Gippsland and gain a first-hand understanding of the impact their decision will have on our traditional industries.''

Mr Chester will take the concerns of local businesses to Federal Parliament when it resumes on 26 August.

He will be officially sworn in as the MHR for Gippsland on the same day.

``I'm looking forward to the opportunity to represent Gippsland in Federal Parliament and I said after my campaign win that it was an honour to be chosen by Gippslanders and I'll never take that for granted,'' he said.
