FUMING motorists fear the “confusing” change in permitted speeds on John Field Drive, Newborough is a “revenue ploy”.
John Field Drive reduces from 80km/h to 40km/h in a school zone.
The VicRoad’s website states, for school zones on 80km/h and above roads, “a time-based 60 km/h speed limit applies from 8am to 9.30am, and from 2.30pm to 4pm on school days”.
CamerasCutCrashes website owner and roaduser advocate Dallas Goldburg said the sudden drop in speed was a revenue ploy.
Mr Goldburg said VicRoads has made it easy for people to lose their license for speeding if they missed the sign and travelled 40km/h over the speed limit.
“The school zones are so inconsistent and it is so easy to get confused,” Mr Goldburg said.
He said if the area was a reduced limit due to children’s safety then reduce the 80km/h zone to 60km/h to avoid loss of license.
“That school zone limit should actually be 60km/h, there needs to be overall consistency with Victorian road speeds,” Mr Goldburg said.
State Road Minister Terry Mulder agreed with Mr Guldberg, saying he was “aware of the frustration and confusion with speed zones”. “There is no doubt that speed zones are an important way of making roads safer, but we need to better understand the impact of frequent zone changes on road safety,” Mr Mulder said.
“I’ve asked VicRoads to conduct a comprehensive review of speed zones.”
He said the investigation would look at routes that have a large number of speed changes, and ways to reduce them.
“The aim is to have speed zone guidelines applied more consistently and help motorists better recognise the relevant speed limits,” Mr Mulder said.
“VicRoads will take into consideration community attitudes to speed management and factors influencing travel speed.” Mr Mulder said the recommendations would be handed to the State Government later this year.
VicRoads regional director Patricia Liew said under state guidelines, a number of factors were involved with determining appropriate speed zones, such as surrounding environment, adjoining roads, road-use and sight distance.
“VicRoads will investigate the speed zones along the section of Moe-Glengarry Road near Lavalla Catholic College’s Presentation College, to see if any changes are required,” Ms Liew said.
